Whalley
The main attraction in Whalley is the 14th century Cistercian Abbey. Whalley abbey is set on the banks of the river Calder and is a place for all kinds of industrial, educational and cultural activities. The ruins are open to the public. The facilities include a visitors centre, nature trail, picnic area and gift shop. Guided tours of the house can be arranged if booked in advance.
The grounds of the Abbey are beautiful and extremely well kept. visitors appreciate the extensive ruins of the old monastry and the Long Walk is widely regarded as one of the main beauty spots in Lancashire. The Medieval church adjacent to the abbey displays 3 Celtic Scandinavian crosses in its churchyard. These date back as far as the 9th and 11th centuries.
The abbey is open from 1100 until 1700 every day.
